Ready for another fun and fast project?
This is a very easy project with an amazing outcome. The beautiful and elegant bath melts would be an excellent gift even to those who are not passionate bathers (like myself). They could be applied as beautiful bathroom decoration and would pamper the skin during and after bath.
The procedure and recipe are very similar to our previous project: Ladybugs and roses
Before starting make sure that you've enough space in the fridge and that you've already read our hygienic manufacturing practice in cosmetic lab and the introduction to Basic equipment and utensil for a cosmetic lab.
Basically you can prepare the bath melts in any mold from silicone truffle and cookie mold to bigger soap molds.
In this photo for example bath melts are poured into a silicone soap mold (exactly the same recipe).
But for this project we've decided to apply paper candy molds. They are available in different sizes and colors in the patisserie department of most department stores and super markets. The ones we use in this project have a capacity of 6-7 gr.
We've applied 2 rosebuds per mold, depending on your mold size you can apply less or more rosebuds, it's totally up to you.
For this project (100 gr bath melt) you'll need:
11,0% lysolecithin (11,0 gr) (This is the emulsifier that disperses the oil in bath water)
You'll need as well:
Paper candy molds of your desired size
Beakers to melt and mix the ingredients
a water bath to melt the butters
Here we go:
One: First prepare the colorant. In this project we've applied the natural colorant alkanet root powder. You shall prepare the colorant at least a few hours in advance. For this certain project you only need 2,5 gr of the infusion but since alkanet is a colorant which you can apply in your butters, balms and other projects (even soap making) you can prepare a stock solution of alkanet and have it handy for your other projects.
The intensity of the color is totally up to you but as a starting point you can apply a 3% concentration (3 gr alkanet root powder for 100 gr oil or 1,5 gr alkanet root powder for 50 gr oil).
Add macadamia oil to alkanet root powder and let it stand for a few hours (at least 4 hours). The longer it stays the more intensive the color.
Alkanet is not soluble in oil, it only gives color to the oil, you have to decant or filter the oil before application.
And this is the beautiful red color after filtering through a tea filter
Two: Melt shea butter and cocoa butter in a water bath or double boiler.
Three: When the butters are melted add the infused alkanet oil, lysolecithin and tocopherol and stir gently to mix all ingredients.
Four: Measure the temperature before adding the fragrance oil, it should be lower than 40oC as you add the fragrance oil. Mixgently.
Five: Prepare your paper forms, for a higher stability we've applied two forms as you see in the photo.
Six: Gently pour (or add a pipette) the butter into paper molds. You can immediately add the rose buds BUT
Seven: It is better if you put the molds in the fridge and wait for about ten minutes. As the butter starts to harden you can exactly place the rosebuds where you want.
Wait a few hours (it depends on the mold size) for the melt to completely harden.
Voila you're done. You can wrap them with the paper mold or remove the paper.
Bath melts shouldn't necessarily be kept in the fridge but they should be kept away from direct heat and sunlight.
