With days getting colder, shorter and darker it's time to think about weekly bath tutorial even if you're not a great fan of a weekly bath like me.
For this special bath oil, I've selected a combination of emollient plant oils rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids as well as vitamins and antioxidants such as Perilla oil, Jojoba oil, poppy seed oil and macadamia nut oil in a base of sunflower oil which is itself a very affordable plant oil rich in lipophilic vitamins such as vitamin A. Calendula extract or maceration in sunflower oil adds to the emolliency and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent soothing agent to comfort dry and sensitive skin.
I've chosen a combination of uplifting essential oils of Grapefruit, blood orange and lemon and warming ginger oil. You are free to choose any other oil combination (considering the viscosity of the oils). Since all ingredients are mixed cold, you're free to apply sensitive oils (such as Perilla oil) high in unsaturated fatty acid, only consider that the more unsaturated the oils (the higher the iodine value), the shorter the shelf life of the oil. I've applied alpha-Tocopherol (vitamin E) for its skin caring benefits as well as for its function as a natural anti-oxidant.
The most important thing in preparing a bath oil is application of a suitable emulsifier to emulsify/disperse the oil in the tub water. Otherwise you'll have an ugly oil layer over the water surface without much profiting from the oil. One of the best known emulsifier till now is Lysolecithin. It not only emulsifies/disperses the oil into water, it imparts to the emolliency and skin caring function of the bath oil.
Before we start I want to recommend you to read our older posts about general information regarding hygienic manufacturing practice in cosmetic lab, introduction to Basic equipment and utensil for a cosmetic lab.
