Happy Sunday everybody
I have another fun and easy project for you: Hand scrub with poppy seeds and poppy seed oil
Poppy seed oil (PAPAVER SOMNIFERUM SEED OIL) is one of my favorites at the moment. Having high concentrations of linoleic acid, palmitic acid and oleic acid, it is a very skin friendly and covering oil, however it has a slightly greasy after feel and it is seldom applied as a standalone oil. But mixed with other oils it is an excellent skin and hair care oil.
In this project, we have prepared cute little hand scrubs with poppy seeds and poppy seed oil. The overall product is a kind of hydrophilic butter, lysolecithin helps rinsing and avoids any unpleasant greasiness after application and rinsing. The skin feels like freshly creamed with a silky, luxurious feel.
We have prepared this scrub in cute hand forms but generally you can prepare them in any silicone, milkyway or HD form. The product is suitable for hand, body and even facial application. Poppy seeds contribute to a very gentle and mild but effective exfoliating. Hope you'll enjoy preparing and applying this product.
Be aware that since the poppy seeds have a higher density than the butters and oils, they will sediment at the bottom of the form, this creates a beautiful color contrast in the product.
Before we start I want to recommend you to read our older posts and general information regarding hygienic manufacturing practice in cosmetic lab, introduction to Basic equipment and utensil for a cosmetic lab.
For this project (500 gr Poppy seed scrub) you'll need:
10,0% lysolecithin (50,0 gr)
1,0% lipophilic aloe extract (5,0 gr)
0,5% Fragrance oil Vanilla (2,5 gr)
12,0% Poppy seeds (60,0 gr)
You'll need as well:
Beakers to melt and mix the ingredients
a water bath to melt the butters
a suitable mold (try our mini-oval mold for example)
Here we go:
One: Set the temperature of the water bath @ around 60 degrees centigrade. Melt cacao butter. Stop heating and add shea butter and soybean oil (which is solid at room temperature) to melt as well.
Two: After all solid ingredients are melted add lysolecithin, Tocopherol, poppy seed oil and Aloe extract and mix gently.
Three: After all ingredients are mixed and as the mixture reaches a temperature of around 40 degrees centigrade add the essential oil and perfume oil and mix.
Four: Weight poppy seeds in a beaker and
Five: add it to the melted butter. Alternatively you can add the poppy seeds directly to the mold and then pour the melted butter and oils over it. Since poppy seeds have a higher density than the oil they will sediment in the mold.
Six: Pour the mixture into mold cavities and bring it directly into fridge. Depending on the mold size, it takes about half an hour to a couple of hours to harden.
After unmolding, depending on the ambient temperature, the scrubs should be kept in the fridge or not. Remember: these are butters and would melt by exposure to heat and sunlight. Store them under 25 degrees centigrade. Pack them in cellophane or in wax paper.

BeHappy and have fun.
