Lilac Swirl Hot Process Soap

I have had no intention of making a tutorial out of this soap as we made it and we have no photos from the production steps at all but Wendy from Glow SkinCare who is a talented soap maker and an amazing distiller herself, was so excited with this soap and praised the foam and consistency, as well as the scent so passionately that I thought it would be a pity not to publish the recipe.

This was a very simple and basic recipe. You know that marbling and swirling are rather impossible in hot process soap. We tried however, not to distribute the colorant uniformly and the results are quite satisfactory.

I have applied Ultramarine violet C.I. 77007 as the colorant (I know it's not considered natural but every now and then I want to create something unnatural) and lilac as the fragrance. You may try this recipe with any colorant and fragrance of your choice and then we can exchange our experiences and results.

Here is the recipe for 1000 gr oil:

25,0%  Rapeseed oil (250,0 gr)

25,0% Sunflower oil (250,0 gr)

15,0% Camelina seed oil (150,0 gr) 

10,0% Soybean oil (100,0 gr)

10,0% Coconut oil (100,0 gr)

5,0% Babassu oil (50,0 gr)

5,0% Castor oil (50,0 gr)

5,0% Shea butter (50,0) gr

I have a habit of calculating the superfat separately :

5,0% Macadamia nut oil (50,0 gr) 

the colorant (UM violet was dispersed with a small whisk in macadamia oil):

0,3% UM violet (3,0 gr)

Fragrance: lilac 2,5% (25,0 gr) 

Water 380,00 gr

NaOH 138,47 gr 

 I didn't calculate any water discount for this recipe and it was a very good decision.

Disclaimer: I suppose you're familiar with the basic of soap making and safety requirements regarding working with lye. If not, please read our basic posts before proceeding further. 

We melted all solid fats and butters (coconut oil, babassu oil and shea butter) together in a water bath @ about 50 degrees centigrade. Then we've added the liquid oils to it. Lye and oil blendd had a temperature of 30-34 as we added lye to the oil. The mixture was blended as usual with a stick blender and cam very soon to a nice trace.

I make my hot process soaps in a water bath and do not use any crock-pot. I simply put the lid of my pot and put it in a water bath @ 65 degrees. After about two hours the soap was ready and we removed the pot from the water bath. We gently mixed the soap as it cooled down and @ about 50 degrees we added the fragrance and then the colorant-macadamia oil blend. After adding the colorant we didn't blend much so that the colorant doesn't blend uniformly. Pouring (rather scooping) in a silicone mold and voila, you see the result.
