Flavonoids are a sungroup of polyphenols (hence a subgroup of phytochemicals) being responsible for many shades of yellow, red and purple in fruits, leaves, beans and roots. Being excellent antioxidants and (some of them) anti-inflammatory agents they have a broad spectrum application in medicine and health care products, in nutrition and in skin care. Flavonoids, as you see in the above diagram are categorized in 6 major classes. Except for isoflavonoids, the rest have the same backbone with a C6-C3-C6 structure and varying functional groups.
Anthocyanins or anthocyanidins are probably the most familiar subgroup to you, available in red and blue berries, reg grape and red wine, cherries, plums and other fruits with red to purple color.
Hope you'll enjoy this post and profit from flavonoids both in your nutrition and skin care products.
BeHappy and have fun
