How to make a cold process sprayable emulsion (Guest post)
Teresa has finally received her Blendia mixer and was so generous to share one of her creations with you.
This is a cold process, low viscosity emulsion made with Sucrose Stearate as the emulsifier.
This is an antiaging facial lotion, easy to apply and loaded with effective goodies. Have a look at her recipe:
Phase A:
2.5% Sucrose stearate
8% Organic Camellia oil
5% Jojoba oil
0.5% Tocopherol
0.1% Rosemary extract
Phase B:
30% Organic Chamomile hydrosol
Phase C:
32.5% Organic Chamomile hydrosol
0.5% Panthenol
2% Sodium lactate
2% Organic liquorice extract
2% Fucocert
2% Orchid extract
1% Sodium PCA
3% Vegeluron
0.1% Sodium phytate
2% Rice powder
Phase D:
3% Organic Evening primrose oil
0.5% Xanthum and Acacia gum blend
Phase E:
0.5% Euxyl K903
2.5% Dermosoft 1388
Phase F:
0.1% Cedarwood essential oil
0.1% Patchouli essential oil
0.1% Geranium essential oil
Phase G:
Lactic acid to adjust pH to 5.0.
Procedure:
1- Blend the ingredients of phase A at room temperature. Sucrose Stearate does not dissolve in oil. It shall only be fully dispersed.
2- Slowly add the chamomile hydrosol in phase B to phase A while stirring. Half way through adding the hydrosol the blend curdles but with further addition and stirring it turns to a smooth high viscosity gel.
3- Turn your blendia and homogenize for a short while.
4- Blend all ingredients in phase C. Add this phase slowly and in aliquotes to the emulsified A+B
5- Stir for a while with spatula and finally for 1-2 minutes with Blendia.
6- Disperse the gum blend in evening primrose oil. Add this slowly and under stirring to the emulsion.
7- Add te reservatives and the essential oils and blend.
Teresa has made a very nice essential oil blend to cover the not-quite-pleasant scent of the evening primrose oil
8- Finally adjust the pH between 5.0-5.5:
Prepare a 10% solution of the lotion (adding 90 parts of distilled water to 10 parts of lotion). In best case, measure the pH with a pH electrode. If you don't have any pH-meter in your lab yet, use a stripe of pH paper to measure the pH.
9- Take your dipslide sample. Fill the lotion in a suitable and disinfected bottle and enjoy the skin feel.
