How to make a shaving foam
If you have ever made a market survey about "natural & organic" shaving products, you've probably been baffled like me about the scarity of these products. There are a few shaving balms and oils on the market and that's it.
Artisan manufacturers of organic hair and skin care are pioneers of amazing innovative products and setting the trend so that even the mainstream industry and the "big boys" even try to imitate the trends set by artisanal creators of personal care but in this case, it seems that all artisans are focused on creating beard and moustach care products rather that shaving (both male and female) products.
I don't think the demand is negligible and anybody who would be capable of creating organic shaving products would enjoy a huge market (at least for a while till others come to the idea to follow).
Anyway, to give you a kickstart, we've prepared some shaving products which we are going to share with you in the future.
For today, I'm sharing a KISS shaving foam which is absolutely easy to make. We made a unisex foam. Feel free to expand it to masculine and feminine, or junior and senior by choosing specific hydrosols, essential oils, extracts and other additives. The most important item of this formulation is a foam dispenser. The rest is quite easy to modify and replace.
Unisex shaving foam formulation:
Phase A | |
Neroli hydrosol | to 100.0% |
Organic aloe freeze dried powder (200:1) | 0.2% |
Panthenol | 1.0% |
Dermofeel PA-3 | 0.1% |
Na-Lactate | 2.0% |
Phase B | |
Disodium/sodium cocoyl glutamate | 8.0% |
Yucca extract | 2.0% |
Organic hydroglyceric chamomile extract | 2.0% |
Organic hydroglyceric dandelion extract | 2.0% |
Phase C | |
Symbiosolv XC | 3.0% |
Euxyl K903 | 0.5% |
Organic grapefruit EO | 0.3% |
Organic palmarosa EO | 0.2% |
Phase D | |
Lactic acid 80% | to adjust the pH |
Dermosoft 1388 eco | 2.5% |
Procedure:
1- Blend all ingredients of phase A, B and C separately (each phase in a separate beaker) at RT
2- Blend phase C into phase B
3- Blend phase (B+C) in phase A
4- Add dermosoft 1388 eco and measure the pH . To measure the pH prepare a 10% solution of the product in distilled water. The pH at this stage is around 6.5.
5- Add enough lactic acid 80% to adjust the pH between 5.2-5.5. This is the optimum pH of our preservative system. If you use another preservative system adjust the pH according to the requirements of your preservative system.
6- Fill in a suitable foam dispenser.
Create your own recipe by swapping the ingredients according to the demands of your market.
