Lip balm is one of the most popular products in "natural" skincare. Not only limited to winter and to a certain age or cultural group, it is pretty much used through the whole year and much used by people who don't use any makeup at all.
Certainly you can vary the colour and scent regarding the age, sex and culture of your aim group or tweak the wax/oil balance considering a certain climatic condition but this is a product that almost everybody loves and uses.
For this tutorial, I have decided to use cranberry micronized powder (has anybody realized that I'm obsessed with this powder at the moment?) to impart some colour to the balm. This is a very fine powder and does not work as an exfoliant. Its main role is imparting colour to the product but not to the skin.
If I were a marketing guy, I would certainly have claimed that this is a super food rich balm with some magical properties but (for better or for worse) I'm not a marketing guy and I honestly can not promise you that it will work any wonder. I'm using it for the sake of the beautiful colour and nice skin feel but you're free to search (or invent) some additional benefits for it if you're going to sell this product (and have better marketing talents than me)
So let's go to the straightforward formulation and procedure.
Formulation:
Phase A |
|
Myrica fruit wax |
26,0% |
Rice bran wax |
5,0% |
Cupuacu butter |
13,0% |
Cocoa butter |
10,0% |
Ascorbyl palmitate |
0,3% |
Phase B |
|
Lexfeel natural |
20,0% |
Rose infused castor oil |
16,7% |
Strawberry seed oil |
1,0% |
Ojon oil |
3,0% |
Natural tocopherols (Vitamin E) |
0,5% |
Rosemary CO2 extract |
0,1% |
Allantoin |
0,1% |
cranberry micronized powder |
4,0% |
Mandarin essential oil |
0,3% |
Procedure:
1- Blend phase A in a beaker and heat it in a water bath between 80-85 oC (this high temperature is for melting ascorbyl palmitate. If you don't use it, heat this phase according to the melting point of your waxes)
2- Blend phase B in another beaker. Keep in mind that neither allantoin nor cranberry powder dissolve in oil. You can only uniformly disperse them in the oil phase.
3- When phase A is completely melted stop heating (but keep the beaker in the water bath) and add phase B to phase A. Blend and immediately pour into suitable tubes and moulds (this is a stick formulation and you need either traditional lip balm tubes or a lipstick mould).
4- Put your tube/mould in the fridge for at least 8 hours (we let it rest overnight) and then remove from the fridge.
Enjoy the lovely colour and pampering feel. Nourish your lips all year around.
BeHappy and have fun
