Just between us, I found the idea of applying a powder to wash the face very primitive and uncool. I have stubbornly rejected them till one of the companies we're working with sent me a sample to test.
I tested the sample and tweaked the formulation and was quite over the moon with the results. Despite all my original resistance and dislike for this product type, I find it very attractive and cool indeed.
You may have 1001 reason to like/love washing powders and want to have your own or plan to add it to your product portfolio. I can not count all of the 1001 reasons but some of them include:
- the fact that the product does not contain water. This means, you do not bottle and transport a product with over 80% water. This is not only environmental friendly, it is quite attractive because the product is self-preserving and you don't need to add any preservative
- your add water to the product and activate your active material in small aliquotes and just before each application
- you can pack this product in your suitcase and take it around the world without any need to get worried about the airport security, leakage, possible instability due to temperature and pressure changes
if all those reasons are not enough, then just try this one formulation for fun and the sake of curiosity and you'll never want to use another cleansing product.
Well, as lovely as these a la mode wash powders are, there is one thing you shall keep in mind when making/using them:
The original idea of making and using these powders is to avoid water, to get more freedom and flexibility for packaging and transport and to avoid plastic. So far so good BUT like any other powder formulation, this product should be protected against humidity otherwise the whole idea of self-preserving is spoiled and apart from that the product will turn to an ugly, gooey mess or a useless clump when it absorbs humidity from the air.
Another fact to consider is that this product is still going to be used in the bathroom and many people are not cool (including myself) about using a glass bottle or jar in the bathroom. The product should remain protected against humidity yet be easy to apply. The products available on the market are mostly packed in sachets (which spoils the environmental friendliness advantage) or in jars. I tried to fill the product in an old-fashioned spice shaker and have kept the container for over two months in my bath and I am quite satisfied with the results. The application is quite easy, and the powder remained intact and didn't absorb much humidity during this time.
No matter which container you decide to use, you need to run stability tests under realistic conditions to make sure your product remains safe, stable and applicable during its whole shelf-life.
About the formulation:
1-You may just wonder about the presence of Lexfeel natural in the formulation. This ingredient is used to avoid the powder making dust whenever you open the container or apply the powder. It somehow keeps everything together without making clumps.
2-This is a waterless product and is self-preserving however I decided to add just a little bit of our magnolia extract, mainly for its anti-acne properties than as an alternative preservative.
3- I have used SCI powder in this formulation. We stock and sell SCI noodles and have made the powder by using a spice mill (electric) which we have just dedicated to grinding our cosmetic lab. If you can fins SCI powder elsewhere feel free to use it, if not you can grind our noodles yourself (at least in small quantities for your trials).
Please use a cotton protective mask and do not inhale the dust when working with SCI.
