Foams are among my favorite cleansing products and I think they are quite underrated in cosmetic formulation specially among artisanal formulators and manufacturers.
This easy formulation is a abase for a very mild gentle facial cleanser (fragrance free) that you can use as well as a hand cleanser (whose hands are not stresses and feeling miserable because of the excessive washing and disinfecting?) or even a gentle body wash for those who frequently take a shower and do not need a strong cleanser with a high load of surfactants. (We do not recommend using any cleansers for babies under 2 years but if you want to make baby products or are a desperate mummy wanting to create a mild and pampering baby cleanser this could be the starting point for you)
Making foams does not require any specific instruments and is the excellent choice for the beginners because:
- you don't go through the hassle of gum dispersion
- you don't go through the hassle of viscosity adjustment
- you don't need any mixer or homogenizer to disperse the gums and blend the surfactants
- you don't need any deareator or centrifuge or vacuum mixer to get rid of the unwanted bubbles in the finished product
Now if that is not all enough to convert you to a foam formulator read the instruction and watch the video for this nice and fluffy foam to see how easy the whole process is. You just drop everything in the same beaker and only need to measure and adjust the pH once or twice. And voila, you have an amazing product.

Procedure:
*A magnetic stirre is an excellent tool for preparing the foam but if you don't have any you can easily handle small quantities (up to 5 lit) with a suitable spatula or a stirring rod.
* Since we are using a preserved hydrosol with a pH around 4,3-4,5 we add 0,1% of Arginin at the beginning to slightly increase the pH. I know by experience that these surfactants do not increase the pH very significantly and this is why we use the arginin to increase the pH. The preservative system we use works independent of the pH but to keep the integrity of the product and to keep the product suitable for everyday use we aim a pH between 4,8-5,0. If you prepare this product as a baby was you need to adjust the pH between 5,0-6,0.
1- Put the hydrosol in the mail vessel and add the arginin and allow the arginin to dissolve.
2- Add the powders: Aloe, skin prebiotic and allantoin one by one and stir completely till they are dissolved.
3- Add the rest of the ingredients in phase A and stir
4- Add the saponin powder and wait till it is completely dissolved
5- Add the rest of the surfactants one by one or all together.
6- Add the preservative
7- Prepare a 10% dilution and measure the pH. In our case it was exactly in the range and it was 4,82. If the pH is lower or higher than the range you can use some arginin or lactic acid to increase or decrease the pH. Since the viscosity is low, you can easily blend the acid or base at any stage.
8- Take your stability and micro kit samples and fill the rest in suitable foam dispensers.
