I've promised to write a tutorial for this and have procrastinate it for several months. Now with the Xmas at the corner it's really time to share the recipe and instruction for this amazing "Gelato".
We've created this product last year and since then it has been presented (well each time a freshly prepared batch of course) at many cosmetics exhibitions around the world.
It is actually quite simple and you'll have fun preparing it. You can present it during an exhibition or on a market day (or in your local shop if you have any) in a beautiful ice cream bowl as in the photo and then pack some in a kind of paper cup (just like ice cream) for customers who purchase it. It would make an amazing xmas gift.
The basic principle is like any other bath butter, you've a blend of butters and oils, an emulsifier/dispersant to break the oil into tiny droplets in the bath water, colorant and fragrance and voila, you've your ice cream.
For the topping we've cut a thin piece of M&P soap with a cookie cutter and then added some grated soap on top. It's totally up to you how to decorate the ice cream.
We've applied grapefruit, eucalyptus and ginger essential oils to the pink, green and yellow bowls respectively. I love the warming and uplifting blend, but you can practically apply any other FO or EO and any colorant available to you.
Before starting please review our older posts about general hygienic manufacturing practice in a cosmetic lab and basic equipments for a cosmetic lab.
You can prepare the bowls as large or as small as you want, as a rough approximation: 40-50 gr per bowl would be quite a reasonable size. You can prepare two smaller bowls out of 50 gr (25 gr per bowl)
You can prepare a big batch of the butter and then divide it to add different colors and EOs or you can go ahead and prepare different butters from the very beginning.
Here are the ingredients you need (each for 50 gr)
For the Grapefruit (pink-orange) butter
12,0% lysolecithin(6,0gr)
0,5% Tocopherol (0,25 gr or 4-6 drops)
look here to know how to make alkanet infusion
For the green (eucalyptus) butter
12,0% Lysolecithin (6,0gr)
0,5% Tocopherol (0,25 gr or 4-6 drops)
1,0 % lypophilic eucalyptus extract (0,5 gr)
2,0% Oxide green (dispersed in glycerin) (1,0 gr)
For the yellow/beige one (ginger)
12,0% Lysolecithin (6,0gr)
0,5% Tocopherol (0,25 gr or 4-6 drops)
3,50% calendula infusion in sunflower oil or any other suitable carrier oil(1,75 gr)
you'll need as well:
Beakers to melt and mix the ingredients
a water bath to melt the butters
suitable jars to fill the butter
Here we go:
1- In a water bath or double boiler melt cocoa butter, shea butter and babassu oil
2- As these are melted stop heating and add all other ingredients (except the essential oils)
3- Stir slowly during cooling down, at about 40o C add the essential oil, put the butters in the fridge and stir every now and then. As the butter is getting hard you probably need a spatula or spoon to stir the butter, the glass rod would not work
4- As the butter solidifies but is still soft enough to be formed, form it with your hands (wear gloves) or scoop it with an ice cream spoon to small balls. Put the balls in the fridge to harden completely
5- Put the balls in a decorative bowl or paper cup (if you want to ship them)
6- With a cookie cutter cut a thin slice of soap (it could be M&P or a CO soap) to whatever shape you like. Grate about 20 gr soap as well and decorate the ice cream with the grated and cut soap.
I hope you've enjoyed this tutorial. Thanks for your visit.
