A very happy Sunday everybody. As Germany (and most parts of middle Europe) are totally under water, one has nothing better to do on a Sunday that to share amazing recipes with enthusiastic readers.
Our previous recipes and tutorials all around "gel-to-milk" system or "self-emulsifying oleogels" were received with a huge welcome by our readers and we've recieved hundreds of comments and questions from around the world (and we're not yet finished with amazing formulations and tutorials, wait till you see more).
Anyway, our amazing Teresa from the Balm Kitchen was generous as always to share a fun and easy to make self-emulsifying facial scrub with you.
If you've missed our previous posts about the gel-to-milk system you can go back and read these posts:
As always before we start I want to recommend you to read our older posts: hygienic manufacturing practice in cosmetic lab and introduction to Basic equipments and utensils for a cosmetic lab.
Basics of gel-to-milk
1-Basically you have to first blend the emulsifier (Dermofeel ® G5 O ) in a polar medium and we use glycerine for this purpose.
2- You usually apply 5-6% of the emulsifier and you can vary the glycerine concentration from 5-50%. The higher the glycerine concentration, the lower the viscosity. You can adjust the viscosity from a very stiff gel to a runny oil by just varying the glycerine concentration
3- After glycerine and Dermofeel ® G5 O are blended, you add the oil phase to the glycerin-emulsifier phase.
This is the most important step in creating a stable oleogel
The oil phase should be added very slowly and in small aliquots with a complete blending after each addition. Otherwise the gel would not form at all or would separate very soon.
4- After you've added all of the oil phase, you can keep it as it is (if you're happy with appearance) or you can add some 1-1.5% water (very slowly and in small aliquots) to improve the transparency of the gel. It is important not to add too much water and you can completely avoid this step if you are happy with the appearance of your oleogel.
Here is Teresa's recipe for a mild facial scrub:
Phase A
6.0% Dermofeel ® G5 O
30.0% Glycerine
Phase B
10.7% organic sweet almond oil
20.0% organic camellia oil
23.0% organic jojoba oil
0.3% organic grapefruit essential oil
Phase C
10.0% jojoba beads
Procedure:
1- Blend glycerine and Dermofeel ® G5 O @ room temperature.
2- Blend all ingredients in phase B and slowly and gradually add this to the glycerine phase. Blend completely after each addition and before you add the next aliquot.
3- Disperse jojoba beads in the blend. (If you go for a higher viscosity oleogel by decreasing the glycerine concentration, it might be easier to disperse jojoba beads in the glycerine phase)
4- Fill in a suitable container and enjoy the skin feel.
Now it's your turn. Chose whatever oil or infusion you like and blend your own facial scrub.
