Soothing After Sun Oil
Actually we should not expose our skin unprotected to the sun, it's a fact that we all know theoretically. But sometimes, (like today in Weiden with a happy sunshine and temperature over 30 degreed centigrade) we can not resist the temptation of the sun, a couple of hours at beach or swimming pool, a long wandering or bike tour or working in the garden, and see, we're red like beetroot. With my middle eastern skin, I have better chances against the sunburn and sun damage but the European marble skin would be irritated after the first quarter of an hour.
In this "Soothing After Sun Oil" we have combined the healing/soothing effects of herbs (Calendula and Yarrow), essential oils (Lavender, Patchouli and Ylang-Ylang) and plant oils (Jojoba and Avocado) in a soothing, nourishing and moisturizing product.
Application: Apply the oil after a sun bath, a solarium visit or other outdoor activities under sun to wet skin (face and body), massage and tap it gently with your finger tips.
For this Project (50 ml After sun oil) you'll need :
2 gr Calendula officinalis ( chopped, dried calendula petals)
2 gr Achillea millefolium ( chopped, dried yarrow)
50 ml Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba oil)
15 ml Persea gratissima (Avocado oil)
0,25 gr Tocopherol (Vitamin E) (ca. 5 drops)
0,05 gr alpha-Bisabolol (1 drop)
3 drops Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender EO)
3 drops Cananga odorate (Ylang-Ylang EO)
2 drops Pogostemon Cablin (Patchouli EO)
A sieve, coffee filter or a cheese cloth
(Optional) disposable pipettes
one 200 ml beaker or any heat resistant glass or a small milk pot
one 100 ml beaker
spatula or glass rod
a water bath
Instruction: Please click here for general information regarding hygienic manufacturing practice and here for a look at basic requirements for a cosmetic laboratory.
One: Prepare the infusion
We've decided to prepare a warm infusion. Weight 2 gr Calendula and 2 gr Yarrow in a beaker, a heat resistant glass or a small milk pot. Add enough Jojoba oil to cover the herbs. Cover the beaker or glass and put it in water bath. By 55-60 oC water temperature heat the beaker for 6-10 hrs. Do not leave the hot plate unattended. Stir the herbs every now and then with a glass rod or a spatula.
Two: After 6-10 hrs, turn off the hot plate and let the glass gradually coll down in water pot. Then filter the oil applying a sieve, a coffee filter or a cheese cloth. The yield would be less than the original quantity of oil because oil would be soaked by the herbs. We had a yield of 35 ml out of 50 ml Jojoba oil.
Three: Add Avocado oil until you've a volume of approx. 50 ml. Add 0,25 gr Tocopherol (skin soothing, conditioning, antioxidant, regulating skin function, anti-aging agent) and 0,05 gr alpha-Bisabolol (anti-inflammatory, calming).
Four: Add 3 drops of Lavender, 3 drops of Ylang-Ylang and 2 drops of Patchouli essential oils. All of these oils are show soothing, regenerative and anti-inflammatory effects.
Five: Stir the mixture with a spatula or a glass rod and fill it in a disinfected bottle.
This oil has a shelf life of 9-12 months. Addition of Tocopherol inhibits rancidity.
Hints to this tutorial:
It was difficult to choose a pure weight or volume based instruction. I hope you can follow the instruction without confusion.
We selected Jojoba oil because of its extraordinary skin conditioning, thermal stability and shelf life. You're free to replace it with other skin nourishing oils. However we suggest Soybean oil for an infusion.
You may even apply a single oil instead of mixing two oils, however we are convinced of Avocado effect on sun/ and solarium damaged skin. It really has a soothing/repairing effect.
This infused oil has an intensive green color and an inherent smell. The more herbs you apply the more intensive the color and smell of the oil. We find 2 grams of each Yarrow and Calendula quite sufficient.
