With the rising awareness about tons of packaging material we're discarding everyday, products that need no or less packaging material are becoming more popular every day. Shampoo and shower bars are among very popular personal care products because you need almost no packaging material and because you don't need to pay for a product containing over 60% water.
Having known this, we've decided to pair our previous tutorial for making a shampoo bar with a tutorial for making a conditioning bar.
If you're accuctomed to using a conventional conditioner it takes a little bit time to get accustomed to the conditioning bar but trust me you'll love it. Keep in mind that this product has the structure of butter (although it doesn't feel greasy at all). This means its consistency is temperature dependent. Do not expose it to direct heat and match the hardness of the bar to the seasonal/regional temperature. When you use the conditioning bar, apply it to your damp hair but keep the water faucet closed. Massage the balm over you hair and then open the water and rinse your hair. If you have the habit of staying under hot water shower during the whole time when you wash your body and hair (like me), the balm will totally melt over your head and disappear.
Now let's jump to the formulation:
Phase A |
|
Myrica fruit wax |
25,0% |
Rice bran wax |
5,0% |
Cupuacu butter |
5,0% |
Murumuru butter |
5,0% |
Babassu oil |
10,0% |
Emulsense HC |
10,0% |
PCA-glyceryl oleate |
1,0% |
Phase B |
|
Lexfeel natural |
15,0% |
Isoamyl laurate |
2,0% |
Natural tocopherols |
0,5% |
Rosemary CO2 extract |
0,1% |
Phase C |
|
Cranberry powder |
3,0% |
Amaranth CO2 extract |
1,0% |
Polyglyceryl-4 oleate |
10,0% |
Peach kernel oil |
3,4% |
Walnut oil |
3,0% |
Grapefruit essential oil |
0,8% |
Geranium essential oil |
0,2% |
Procedure:
1- Blend all 3 phases in separate beakers. Cranberry powder does not dissolve. You need to keep it suspended in the oil phase.
2-Heat phase A in a water bath at ca. 75 oC. This is the temperature needed for the rice wax to melt. If you're using another wax adapt the temperature to your wax with the highest melting point.
3- When all of phase A is melted stop heating and add phase B and blend.
4- Add phase C and pour in suitable molds (we use silicone soap molds) and bring the mold into the fridge.
5- Let the conditioner bar cool down and harden (12 hours at least) before removing the bars from the mold cavities.
6- Wrap them in wax paper and store them protected from direct heat and sunshine.
7- Enjoy the hair feel after rinsing your hair.
